this is mornings on 2. >> good morning. welcome to mornings on two. it's saturday november 10th. >> a cold start to the day. let's check in with rosemary and get a quick look at your saturday. >> reporter: good morning. most of us in the 40s but i will direct you to the north bay. the valley locations. that's where we find the advisory. take a look at how widespread it is. down the valley and into the bay. here at home it'll last through eight this morning so we have another hour to go. widespread. we will look around at your current conditions coming up. >> happening right now two water mains busted open in a peninsula neighborhood, water went down the street causing an early morning messw. are live in palo alto to show you the clean up. >> right now the utility workers have their equipment out in the middle of the

street. you cane this bulldozer piece of equipment scooping up the mess that the two water main breaks caused. off to the right over here you can see a jackhammer ready. they will be digging drilling in to the street to get to the source of the water main break. it happened at 2:45 this morning. you can see right behind that jackhammer that the water is still flowing. they haven't been able to shut it off and it appears according to the utility workers there are two sources of this water main break. one right here right above the bricks, the other on the other side of the street where you saw that bulldozer scooping up some of the water. appears there are two water mains that may have broken. at least one family woke up to find water seeping into their home. the house most affected is onto corner. the family had to call in specialists early this morning to clean up the mess. >> seeped in through the

walls, a little bit in the living room, office and some -- some bedroom spaces. >> reporter: utility workers aren't sure how the water mains broke. they say it may be because of the cold weather but that's something they will have to investigate once they find the source of the two breaks. until they get the water mains sealed off people in the neighborhood may not have water service this morning, something to be aware of and obviously as the construction workers and the utility workers do some of their work here cleaning things up this road is going to remain closed for most of the morning. live in palo alto. >> homeless activists worry people on the streets will get sick because of colder than normal weather. >> hey, you want blankets in hey, how you doing? i meet you last year didn't i? >> reporter: last night they passed out blankets near happy hollow park. some of the homeless can't get

into shelters and will have to stay at the camp. one was grateful for the blankets after someone damaged her tent. >> take it day by day. then the blankets; they help a lot. >> you pass out blankets and that's -- just, just a band-aid but a solution is building housing. >> reporter: homeless activists estimate 70 people die every year from exposure to cold. >> police are searching for a person who killed a teen in east oakland last night. witnesses say a car pulled up next to the victim's vehicle in the fruitvale district. the gunman if got out and fired several rounds in to the vehicle. the male victim was in his late teens. police have not yet released his name. a young man is recovering after he was hit by a bullet in a drive by shooting overnight in east palo alto. the 23-year-old was in a car

with friends when another vehicle drove past and shot at them. this happened just before midnight. the victim is at a hospital in stable condition. no arrests have been made. a new occupy camp has popped up on the berkeley campus, protesters put up tents yesterday, a year after campus police broke up a camp set up to protest tuition hikes. last year police used batons to remove the protesters, they accused the officers of excessive force. >> it's the shake up in washington that nobody saw coming. the director of the cia stepped down because of an affair. nicole collins has more. >> reporter: cia director stepping down, admitting he had an affair. the retired four star general saying in a letter that such

behavior is unacceptable both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as this. >> he has led america through some very, very, very difficult times. i think many of us are surprised that these kind of things happen. >> reporter: the general's affair with his biographer was revealed in the course of an fbi investigation. she was with him in afghanistan from july 2010 to july 2011. he was been married for nearly 40 years. they met when he was a cadet at west point. he led a 37 year career in the army eventually leading the military campaigns in iraq and afghanistan. the president issuing i statement saying that my thoughts and prayers are with the couple. i wish them the best at this difficult time. the general was sworn in as cia

director in september 2011. he resigned day as head of key hear uppings about the libya terror attack. >> we should have the general testify. if not this week then soon after because i don't see how we could put the picture together without him. >> reporter: a senate committee aid said cia deputy director who now serves as acting director of the agency will testify in place of the general on thursday. in washington. >> we are more details on the investigation that led to the resigning. according to reports the fbi got a tip about the affair and started investigating to determine whether it posed a security risk. the general is not accused of any wrongdoing. the concern was he could be blackmailed or put into a at risk spot. now there is speculation about who is going to replace him as head of the cia.

one of the names is former southern california congresswoman, jane harmon. she is a democrat who was a ranking member of the house intelligence committee. she resigned from her post last year to be head of the woodrow wilson center. >> a woman who mosted comments about the president said she is not a racist. after the election the 22-year- old posted on her facebook page a racial slur and the words, maybe he will get assassinated this term. she delete that message and later said she was stating her opinion. her employer has fired her. the case has been turned over to the secret service. some are now returning to restore the jersey shore nearly two weeks after sandy, those who used to live in the area got to return home for the first time yesterday. they were taken by bus to their

people have shown their love and sore. i think my husband would be touched by it. he would be happy to seat community he loved served so much has reached out in this way. >> 90 people signed up for the 50-dollar a plate fundraiser. all of the money raised will go to the widow and her four children. >> an officer in colorado mistakenly shot and killed another officer. james davies was shot and killed responding to calls about a prowler early friday morning. police say he was wearing a uniform and protective vest when he was killed. there were several officers on the scene which police described as choatic. >> he was in one yard i believe the backyard of that house. there were other officers on the other side of the fence. he was mistaken, he was seen and mistaken for an attacker

with a gun. >> reporter: the officer who shot him is reportedly having a difficult time with the officer's death. the officer was a six year veteran of the department. he leaves behind a wife and two children. >> the occupy movement started as a protest but is now being used to help those affected by sandy. volunteers are occupy sandy are sorting donations in berkeley. they jump started the effort to help storm victims. they mobilized through social media. >> twitter is our native language so we talked to each other as things were going on and each stepped up in the way they could help. >> occupy sandy is using the church as their main center and phone bank. they posted supplies they need online and then send volunteers. many people in neighborhoods like rocca way and red hook still don't have heat or power

and feel they have been abandoned. >> gas rationing in new york city and long island seems to be working lines now shorter and people don't appear to be as frustrated. driver was license plates in odd and even numbers alternating days they can fill up. officials say many supply terminals remain shut down or limited following the storm and aaa said drivers are filling up more because they are afraid gas won't be available. the president will travel to new york next week to see how the recovery effort is coming along. he will meet with storm victims and first responders on thursday. new york officials say the damage from sandy in their state alone could total $33 billion. >> now that the election is over the health care law will be a main topic of discussion between republicans and democrats. the gop hoped to repeal the act but with the president winning the election both parties have indicated its time to fine tune

. a water gushing out of pipes in a peninsula neighborhood. that has some residents wake up this morning to flooded streets. good morning. well bump back to mornings on two. >> good morning. water from two broken mains flowed for hours and how removing all that mess could take all day long. we are live in palo alto where clean up efforts are already underway. >> reporter: and they have made a lot of progress and it looks like they have actually found the source of the two water main breaks and have sealed them off because now you just see them cleaning up. you don't see water gushing out

of the pavement. a half hour ago we could see some of the water bubbling up from the broken bricks and then gushing through the gutters out here. now you can see the water source has been capped off. now they have the big pieces of construction equipment cleaning up and also this looks like this will vacuum up a lot of the water that's still pool ifed ed up. let's show you the video. this water main break, they believe there were two, one on opposite sides of the street started at 2:45 this morning. utility workers believe there were two because there were two sources of water bubbling up. they estimate the two mains were between eight to ten inches wide. at least one family woke up to water gushing in to their home. it's on the corner of walnut where the water was coming out. they called in a specialist early this morning to help them clean up. >> sot water just came, came out through the street and it came through the house just to

for a man wanted for murder. he is on the run in a gray 2006 chevrolet. neighbors said that he was married to a woman who matches the description of the woman killed at that house you are looking at yesterday morning. police say a 911 call was made from the house just after 5:30 but officers didn't arrive until seven because they were dealing life threatening situations at scenes of some car crashes. >> those are higher priority calls. the initial 911 call there was nothing said and no answer on call back. >> police say they received two nonemergency calls reporting a disturbance at same house two days before the homicide. they say someone called back to cancel the call. they are still investigating each call. >> new stats show antioch is not becoming a safer place to live. violent and property crimes are up 44%, arrests are down 17% from a year ago. the police chief said that the

department doesn't have money hire more officers and the average response time is 11 minutes. >> i think the community realizes what's going on but they don't know what to do about it. they feel helpless, they feel frustrated. i think its time for our community to -- launch a campaign. >> antioch police have arrested two people in connection to a homicide thursday night. even so, frustrated and concerned residents have gun circulating petitions to allow citizens to carry loaded hand guns. the department does plan to hire extra officers. >> san francisco police have arrested a third man for vandalizing eye bus the night the giants won the world series. the suspect. a 24-year-old adam diaz is an oakland resident. he and two others are charged with vandalizing and burning the bus. police are crediting the public

i kicked in the wind shield and saw her face and it was busted up. her nose was broken and she had blood. >> reporter: the driver went to the hospital for a cat scan. her uncle blames the accident on the is accelerator getting stuck. the family in the home went out to -- was out to dinner at the time. >> chrysler has announced it's recalling nearly 920,000suv's after concerns that air bags could inflate while people are driving. it affects 2002 through 2004 jeep grand cheer key. last year they randomly went off 215 times causing 80minor injuries. they plan to install a filter for free to fix the problem. >> a search warrant lead emoryville police to a quarter million dollar marijuana stash. they sent us this photograph of box after box of marijuana from that bust. they got 400 pounds of it. they found the drugs thursday

while serving a search warrant. they are still searching for those responsible. a jury in san francisco reached a verdict in the trial of a man accused of several violent attacks. the 32-year-old is a accused of sexually assaulting three women last year along 24th street but he won't learn his fate until tuesday until after the holiday weekend. prosecutors presented both dna evidence and alleged recorded confessions. he was also charged with attempted murder, robbery and kidnapping. he faces life if convicted. >> a group of protesters plans to rally against bay area police. they accuse officers of excessive force. they site incidents including the shooting death of a high school senior in play and the oscar grant shooting. they say an african american is killed by law enforcement every 36 hours in the united states.

napa valley college is airing a documentary about a student shot and killed by vallejo police two years ago. officers said they fired on him because he had a loaded gun. many of his friends and family don't believe that. the documentary made by his friend will be shown next wednesday at 7:00 p.m. >> a michigan man accused of shooting at drivers is facing 60 felonies. he was arraigned yesterday on charges including assault with intent to murder. the detectives shed new light on several of the shootings on interstate 96 from the types of cars the victims drove to where the bullets hit. >> a fired bullet was recover from the passenger of the chevy. this bullet went through the driver's side front door. >> police also say they recovered a spent shell casing on the outside of the car. it was a nine millimeter, same type used in the shootings. he could be sentenced to life if he is convicted.

>> controversial tax on guns has been approved in the chicago area. the cook county board of commissioners said for every gun purchased in the county there will be a new 25-dollar tax. the tax is meant to help off set health care and other costs caused by gun violence. county officials say the average shooting victim costs taxpayers about $52,000 because nearly 70% of victims don't have insurance. the gun tax will take effect april 1st. >> there is now a permanent american military presence in eastern europe. ten united states airmen arrived in poland yesterday. they are going to help prepare joint united states exercises on war planes. >> it's a very important and historic step because it marks the beginning of an unprecedented level of cooperation on polish, european and american security. >> the united states is also setting up a new generation missile shield facility in poland.

a frost iy start to the morning but frost advisory has been allowed to expire. mostly clear skies and a cool one this morning. mostly sunny and cool for the afternoon. sunsets at 5:02. a chilly night. what you can expect for the weekend coming up. >> topping the newscast in the past hour crews have capped off two water main leaks in a palo alto neighborhood. they were first seen around 2:45. gallons of water gushed through --. it's believed the breaks happened at opposite ends of the road and water seeped into at least one home. crews had trouble locating the areas of the break so they brought in large construction equipment. in the next half hour we will have a live report on that effort. >> homeless activists worry people will fall ill this weekend due to the colder than normal weather. >> hey. you want blankets? how you doing? i meet you last year? >> reporter: last night they passed out blankets at homeless camps in san jose. some of the homeless can't get into shelters and will have to spend the next few days at the cam much. one woman -- at the cam one

highway 50 from twin bridges to myers in el dorado. those extreme conditions have caused a lot of accidents, many of the cars are getting stuck in the snow or just getting off the road. snow boarders are happy. they are gearing up to hit the slopes, sguaw valley -- they have gotten a foot of new snow and the snow machines working overtime. they plan to open wednesday november 21st just in time for the thanksgiving day weekend. >> this morning police are searching for a person who killed a teen in east oakland. a car pulled up next to the victim's vehicle at parole's court. the gunman got out and fired several rounds in to the vehicle. the male victim was in his late teens. he lived in the neighbor other. police haven't yet released his name. a young man is recovering after he was hit by a bullet in a drive by shooting overnight

in east palo alto. he was in a car when another car drove past and shot at them. the victim is at hospital in stable condition. so far no arrests. >> a new occupy camp has popped up ott the berkeley campus. they put up tents yesterday a year after police broke up a camp. police used batons to remove the occupiers last year. they accused the officers of excessive force and filed a lawsuit. that is still pending. >> the president has accepted the resignation of the cia director. his affair with his biographer was revealed in the course of an fbi investigation. the general has been married for nearly 40 years, she is

also married. he was sworn in 2011. >> obviously this hurts the general but it even hurts the country more. he is a man of extraordinary talent, extraordinary dedication, extraordinary hard working. he would give his briefings, he never turned to his aides for help. he was there, he knew it inside out. he was 24-7. >> he was scheduled to testify next week during key congressional hearings about the libya terror attack. the acting director will now testify. according to reports the fbi got a tip about the affair and started investigating to determine whether it posed a security risk. he was not accused of any wrongdoing. the concern was that he could be blackmailed or put in an arisk spot. there is already speculation about who will replace him as the head of the cia. one of the names is the former southern california congress

woman jane harmon. she was a ranking member on the house intelligence committee. she resigned last year to be the head of the woodrow wilson center. >> people are returning to the jersey shore nearly two weeks after sandy. people who used to live in the hardest hit areas got to go back for the first time yesterday. they were take especially by bus to their former homes in seaside heights where they had an hour to pack. some said they weren't prepared for what they saw. >> you have a list and you are prepared to get what you want but you know you spend like a -- you spend like 15 minutes devastated, just trying to look to see what's on the floor. >> reporter: at the main staging center in tom's river new jersey a company has been making restore the shore t- shirts to race money for schools and shelters, more buses will take people into disaster zone each day through tuesday. it started as a protest but now the occupy movement is being used to help those

affected by sandy. we go into a shelter in brooklyn. >> reporter: it's not even sunday and the church is full. this is no normal service. inside volunteers are sorting through donations for occupy sandy. the grass roots relief effort was jump started by occupy wall street. they made national attention for their rallies. in the days after sandy hit the east coast they quickly mobilized using social media. >> how are you getting the word out? >> twitter is our native language. as the tragedy happened we talked to each other as things were going ono and each person stepped up. >> reporter: they are using the church as their main center and phone bank. they post needed supplies online and dispatch volunteers to nearby neighborhoods including rocca way and red hook where many are without

heat and power. >> folks were devastated. they were devastated because they didn't have supplies and they were devastated because they felt like people abandoned them. >> reporter: one resident said more help is needed. >> people going crazy trying to get everything. my house got robbed. i didn't get flooded, i got robbed. >> reporter: one native went to the center to lend a hand. >> you have to really put yourself out there and figure if you are in that position you would want people to come help. i brought my daughters and we are here to help. >> there have been many stories of hours long waits for gas and price gouging after the storm and coming up we will tell you how authorities trying to help stop that. >> good morning to you. it's a cool start. giving a i live look at san

not a racist. after tuesday's election the 22- year-old posted on her facebook page a racial slur and the words maybe he will get assassinated this term. while she delete that message she later said she was just stating her opinion. her employer has fired her and the case is with the secret service. >> police in colorado say an officer shot and killed officer officer on accident. he was shot and killed friday morning. he was wearing a uniform and protective vest when he was killed. there were several officers on the scene which police described as choatic the. >> he was in one yard. i believe the backyard of that house. there were other officers on the other side of the fence. and he was mistaken, he was seen and mistaken for an attacker with a gun.

>> the officer who shot him is reportedly having a difficult time with the officer's death. the officer was a six year veteran of the department. he leaves a wife and two young children. >> a bay area officer killed in the line of duty was remembered in a special night. they held a night of drinks, dinner and dancing in honor of the officer. he was shot during a traffic stop along 680 and his widow said that the event warmed her heart. >> just overwhelmed how much people have shown their love and support for us. it's really just beautiful. i think my husband would be touched by it. i think he would be happy to seat community he loved serving so much has reached out to us

parties say its time to fine tune the policy. areas they will look at include stabilizing costs, focusing on prevention and making easier for people to find affordable plan. more than 40 million either don't have health insurance or they don't have enough. >> the city of san francisco is preparing to help provide and pay for sex change operations for those without insurance. the city will spend the next several months setting up the guidelines for a potential patient. then it must line up providers to preform the procedures. some say that they are divided on if the city should pay for that. >> it's -- you know more of a choice and it should be spent on other more pressing health matters. >> it's helped me to find a way to improve my quality of

life. sometimes it's really a matter of life and death. >> the city said it already provides primary care, mental health and hormone their pay for those who qualify. it could be added about a year from now. >> a last minute deal may keep a hospital from closing. the city andal media have each agreed to pay three million to keep the facility open for at least three more years. if approved ownership would transfer from sutter to the county. the hospital has been losing money and needs $6 million a year to continue operating. thousands of registered nurses planning to strike next week. it includes nurses at eight sutter health hospitals in the bay area and two hospitals associated with the hospital corporation of america. they plan to walk out tuesday with the nurses continuing to strike wednesday. they say they are upset about patient care conditions. >> american airlines has a possible deal with its pilots. it still has to go up for a vote but it could pave the way for the airline to get out of bankruptcy. the parent company filed for chapter 11 just about a year

ago and said its struggled delayed flights. >> safeway plans to hire more military veterans next year. they have hired 1300 this year. they say that's part of a longstanding policy. there is another 41 week long program to train and place vets in top leadership positions. pg&e said its planning to offer career training courses for veterans. its part of the power pathway program. the utility said it expects more than 40% of the work force to be eligible in the next five- years and view veterans as high potential candidates for the positions, classes are being offered next year. to apply contact pg&e. >> there are a lot of events being held this veteran's day weekend. the rotc program at the university of san francisco is hosting a fun run right now. it's a four mile run or walk around lake merced, the run

with a lot of equipment they have been using. you can see all the mud out on the sidewalk here in the street. on the other received the street they have a backhoe out here. they are digging up the ground to find and replace one of the two water mains that broke this is a project that's probably going to last all day long. >> the two water mains bursa round 2:45 this morning sending water gushing in to the street. the mains are both eight inches wide and are on opposite sides of newall street. at least one family woke up to find water gushing in to their home early this morning, they are on the corner right next to where the water was coming out. they called in the specialist early this morning. the utility workers suspect that the freezing temperatures overnight may have caused the

water mains to burst. a supervisor said at least one of the mains is an older cast iron pipe and the other one is a little newer but they believe the cold overnight temperatures may have contributed to the problem. back out here you can see they have dug a hole about four, five feet deep. they are in the process of replacing one of the two broken water mains, we saw them bring out what looked like a newer extension of pipe that they will likely be using to fix and replace the broken one. people on the westside of newall, all these homes to the left. these people don't have -- they will have interrupted water service. utility workers say homes on the westside, there is about 20 to 30 of them -- they are going to have interrupted water service. something people should be aware of because of the construction work taking place and the repair work.

live in palo alto. >> several people are looking for a new place to stay today after a fire at their home over night. it happened just before one at an apartment complex. firefighters say at least one unit was destroyed. nobody was hurt. firefighters trying to figure out the cause. >> there is a manhunt unitway for a man wanted for murder. investigators say that he is on the run in a gray 2006 chevrolet. neighbors told ktv everybody was harried to a woman who matches the description of the woman killed at that house yesterday morning. police say a call was made from that house just after 5:30 but officers didn't arrive until seven in the morning because they were dealing life threatening situations at the scene of some car crashes. >> those are higher priority calls. in the first call there was nothing said and no answer on call back. >> police also say they received two nonemergency calls

reporting that disturbance at that house two days before the homicide. they say someone called back to cancel the call and police are still investigating each call. >> new stats show antioch is not becoming a safer place to live. police say violent and property crimes up 44% and arrests are down 17% from a year ago. the police chief said that the department doesn't have money to hire more officers. he said the average response time for a priority call is about 11 minutes. >> i think the community railings what's going on but they don't know what to do about it. they feel helpless, they feel frustrated and i think its time for our community to -- launch a campaign against it. >> police have arrested two people in connection with a homicide thursday night. even so, frustrated concerned residents have started circulating petitions to let citizens carry loaded guns. >> a jury in san francisco has reached a verdict in the trial

of a man accused of several violent attacks. the 32-year-old is a accused of sexually assaulting three women along 24th street but he is not going to learn his fate until after the holiday weekend on tuesday. prosecutors presented dna evidence and alleged recorded confessions during his trial. he was charged with attempted murder, robbery and kidnapping and faces life if convicted. the department of corrections and rehabilitation plans to start a massive review that could drop warrants for thousands of violaters in the state. this at a time when the state is trying to help over crowding at jails. the plan would be -- involve people who aren't convicted of violent crimes, sex offenders would be excluded. >> both major parties announce they are willing to work with the other side to avert the fiscal cliff. >> tuesday you said loud and clear that you won't tolerate disfunction or politicians who see compromise as a dirty word.

of his car. this entered through the driver's side front door. >> police also said they recovered a spent shell casing on the outside of the car. it was a nine millimeter, the same type used in the shootings. he could be sentenced to life if convicted. >> a controversial tax on guns has been approved in the chicago area. the cook county board of commissioners said for every gun purchased in the county, there will be a new 25-dollar tax. it's meant to open off set health care and other costs caused by gun violence. officials say the average shooting victim cost taxpayers about $52,000 because nearly 70% of victims have no health insurance. the gun tax will take effect april 1st. >> a search warrant lead to emoryville police to a quarter million dollar marijuana stash. the department sent us this picture of box after box of marijuana from that bust that was four hundred pounds of it. detectives found those drugs

sticking around. sunset's around 5:02 and a mostly chilly evening. the forecast, coming up. a water main break in the peninsula overnight. and allie rasmus is live in palo alto where utility crews are cleaning up and they have to dig up problem pipes, right, allie? >> reporter: that's right. the digging is well under way, claudine. in fact, they just finished breaking a hole in the pavement. they used this giant breaker, as they call it, attached to that backhoe you see there, to make a 4 to 5-foot deep hole in the ground. that's what they are working on right now. they are working on replacing one of the two broken water mains located right underneath the street. here's a close-up look at the busted water main. it's been gushing water since about 2:45 this morning. the utility workers here suspect that the freezing temperatures overnight here may have caused this problem. the supervisors out here say that at least one of the mains is an older cast iron pipe that may have burst, again, because of the extremely cold temperatures overnight.

at least one family in this neighborhood had flood damage in their home when the gushing water poured in through a side wall. they had to call in a specialist to help them clean up the mess. >> it seeped in through the walls, a little bit in their living room, some office, and some bedroom spaces. >> utility workers are making progress in fixing the problem. we watched them bring in a new section of pipe to replace the broken one, but until utility workers get these broken water pipes completely replaced, people in this palo alto neighborhood on newell and walnut may not have water service this morning. the water service may be sort of hit or miss. now, if we take a step back here, you can see to our left, they said the homes on the west side of newell are the ones affected by this intermittent water service. there are about 20 to 30 homes located on newell, west side of newell from embarcadero where the traffic light is, where the truck is turning around, all the way to the other side of the street to channing. so the repair work is under way.

you can see they are still using the backhoe to clear some of the dirt and some of the water away so they can replace that old broken pipe with the new one, and the utility workers tell me this is a project that will probably last most of the day kl 2news. homeless advocates say they worry people living in the bay area will fall ill this weekend due to the cold weather. >> you guys want some blankets? >> sure. >> hey, brother, how are you doing? >> last night, volunteers passed out blankets at homeless encampments near happy hollow park in san jose. some will spend the next few days at the encampment. one woman was grateful for the blankets after someone deliberately damaged her tent. >> take it day by day. >> and then the blankets, how much does that help? >> oh, it helps a lot. >> you come out here and pass out blankets, and that's just, you know, just a band-aid. but a realistic solution is

building housing. >> homeless advocates say they estimate 70 people die in santa clara county every year from exposure to cold. if you are heading out to tahoe this weekend, get ready for big crowds and lots of snow. more than a foot of new snow has come down in the sierra nevada, raising hopes for skiers and snowboarders. boreal ski resort announced it is opening slopes this afternoon after getting 8 inches of new snow. snow-making machines have been working around the clock. the resort will open at 3:30 this afternoon, offering lower than normal ticket prices. the resort will also stay open tomorrow. meanwhile, squall valley and alpine meadows are counting down the days for opening. the resort sent pictures of their preps. both resorts plan to open the day before thanksgiving. and if you are getting ready to head up the hill, just remember, chains are required on 80 east of baxter to truckie. chains are also required on

highway 50 from twin bridges to myers, in el dorado county. the extreme conditions have caused numerous accidents already. rosemary will have a full look at your forecast in about four minutes. new this morning, we are learning that a boy from santa clara is among those killed in the large earthquake in guatemala this week. 11-year-old aldo dominguez vasquez lived with his uncle and was working at his family's quarry when the 7.4 quake hit. he and nine other relatives were killed by falling rocks. the boy's parents still live in the united states. 52 people were killed in wednesday's quake. well, this morning, police are searching for the person who killed the teenager in east oakland. witnesses say a car pulled up next to the victim's vehicle at parolee court in the fruitvale district last night. the gunman got out, firing several rounds right into the vehicle. the male victim was in his late teens. he lived in that neighborhood. police have not yet released his name. a young man is recovering this morning after he was hit by

a bullet in a drive-by shooting overnight in east palo alto. police tell us the 23-year-old was in a car with friends on albernie street when another car drove past and shot at them. this happened just before midnight. the victim is in the hospital in stable condition. no arrests have been made. a new occupy encampment has popped up on the uc berkeley campus. last year, uc police used batons to remove occupiers who in turn accused officers of excessive force and filed a $15 million lawsuit. that is still pending. president obama has accepted the resignation of cia director david petraeus after the retired four-star general admitted to an extra marital affair. his affair with his biographer, paula broadwell, was revealed in the course of an fbi investigation. general petraeus has been married for nearly 40 years. broadwell is also married.

petraeus was sworn in as cia director in september of 2011. >> obviously, this hurts general petraeus, but even hurts the country more. he's a man of extraordinary talent, extraordinary dedication, extraordinarily hard working. he would give his briefings, never turned to his aides for any assistance. he was there. he knew it inside-out. he was a 24/7. >> petraeus was scheduled to testify next week during key congressional hearings about the benghazi terror attack. michael morel will testify in his behalf. >> the investigation began, determine whrg it posed a security risk. petraeus was not accused of any wrongdoing. the concern was more that he could be potentially blackmailed or put into a vulnerable spot. there is already speculation about who is going to replace david petraeus as head of the cia. one of the names being thrown around right now is former southern california

congresswoman jane harman. harman is a democrat who was a ranking member on the house intelligence committee. she resigned from her post in congress last year to become head of the woodrow wilson center for scholars. people are now returning to the jersey shore, nearly two weeks after sandy hit. those who used to live in the hardest-hit areas got to go back home for the first time yesterday. they were taken by bus to their former homes in seaside heights, where they had one hour to pack what they could. some of them said they were not prepared for what they saw. >> you have a list and you're prepared to get what you want, but, you know, you spend like 15 minutes -- it's devastating, trying to look what's on the floor. >> at the main staging center in toms river, new jersey, a company has been making restore the shore t-shirts to raise money for schools and shelters. more buses will take people into the disaster zone each day through tuesday. the white house says barack obama will travel to new york next week to view how far

center in san ramon. all the money raised will go to karen youngstrom and her four children. police in colorado say a fellow officer mistakenly shot and killed another officer. officer james davies was shot and killed in lakewood while responding to calls about a prowler early friday morning. police say davies was wearing a uniform and a protective vest when he was killed. there were several officers on that scene, which police described as chaotic. >> officer davies was in one yard. i believe the backyard of that house. there were other officers on the other sides of the fence, and he was mistaken. he was seen and mistaken for an assailant, with a gun. >> the officer who shot officer davies is reportedly having, understandly, a difficult time with what happened. officer davies was a six-year veteran of that department and leaves behind a wife and two young children. the statue of liberty is

glowing for the first time since it was damaged by superstorm sandy. lady liberty was set to open to the public again on its birthday, but was shut down after it was damaged by the storm, which hit new york october 29th. officials say there is no estimate on when the statue of liberty will reopen to visitors again. gas rationing in new york city and long island seems to be working. lines at gas stations are shorter and people do not appear to be as frustrated. drivers with license plates ending in odd and even numbers are alternating days they can fill up. gas industry officials say many supply terminals remain shut down or limited, following sandy. and aaa says drivers are filling up more often because they are afraid that gas won't be available. president obama will travel to new york next week to see how superstorm sandy recovery efforts are coming along. he will meet with storm victims and first responders on thursday. new york officials say the damage from sandy in their state could total $33 billion. a turlock woman who posted

inflammatory comments against the president insists she's not a racist. after tuesday's election, 22-year-old denise helms posted on her facebook page a racial slur and the words "maybe he will get assassinated this term." while she deleted that message, helms later posted that she was simply stating her opinion. cold stone creamery has fired her. her case has also been turned over to the secret service. well, now that the elections are over, the president's healthcare law will be a main topic of discussion between democrats and republicans. the gop had hoped to repeal the 2010 affordable care act, but with president obama's re-election, both parties now say it is time to fine tune the policy. areas they will be looking at include stabilizing healthcare costs, emphasizing preventive medicine and how to make it easier for consumers to find affordable plans. more than 40 million americans either don't have health insurance or they don't have enough. thousands of registered bay area nurses are planning to strike again next week. it includes nurses at eight

sutter health hospitals in the bay area and two hospitals affiliated with the hospital corporation of america. both groups plan to walk out tuesday, with the sutter nurses continuing to strike on wednesday. the unions say the nurses are upset about patient care conditions and contract disputes. american airlines has a tentative deal with its pilots. the agreement still has to go up for a vote, but it could ultimately pave the way for the airline to get out of bankruptcy. american's parent company filed for chapter 11 protection one year ago. safeway plans to hire more military veterans next year. the company already hired 1300 vets this year so far, part of a long-standing policy by its foundation to support the u.s. military. there is an additional 41-week long program to train and place vets in top leadership positions in safeway. well, a sacramento man set to lose his job next year is also celebrating a big change in his luck. michael rule matched five numbers in the october 30th mega millions drawing and he just claimed that prize last week. there he is, smiling with the

. a big drop in temperatures has caught many people in the bay area by surprise. good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it is saturday, november 10th. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. here is a look at top stories we're following this morning. be prepared for chilly temperatures, if you are getting ready to head outside. some homeless advocates worry that people living on bay area streets will fall ill this weekend, due to the cold weather. last night, volunteers passed out blankets at homeless encampments near happy hollow park in san jose. the snow continues to fall in the sierra this morning. chains are required on several highways in the reno and tahoe area. boreal ski resort announced its opening this afternoon because of all the new powder. and police are looking for the person who they say killed a teenager in east oakland last night. witnesses say a car pulled up next to the victim's vehicle on parolee court. police say the gunman got out

and fired several shots into the car. there is a manhunt under way for a san jose man wanted for murder. investigators say troy nesenza was on the run in a 2006 silverado. neighbors told us the man was married to a woman who matches the description of the woman killed on evangeline drive yesterday morning. police say a 911 call was made from that house just after 5:30, but officers didn't get there until about 7:00 because they were dealing with life threatening situations at the scene of some car crashes. >> those are higher priority calls. and in the initial 911 call, there was nothing said and no answer on callback. >> police also say they did receive two nonemergency calls reporting a disturbance at that same house two days before the homicide. but they say someone called back to cancel the police. police are still investigating the calls. well, a new statistics suggests antioch is becoming a more dangerous place to live. records show violent and

property crimes are up 44%, but arrests are down 17% from a year ago. antioch's police chief tells ktvu the department just doesn't have money to hire more officers. he says the average response time for a priority call is about 11 minutes. >> i think the community realizes what's going on in antioch, but they don't know what to do about it. they feel helpless. they feel frustrated. and i think it's time for our community to launch a campaign against it. >> antioch police have arrested two people in connection to a homicide thursday night. even so, frustrated and concerned residents have begun circulating online petitions to allow citizens to openly carry loaded handguns. san francisco police have arrested a third man for vandalizing a muni bus the night the giants won the world series. the suspect is 24-year-old adam diaz. he's an oakland resident. police say this is diaz. a photograph showing him using a skateboard to break windows on that bus. diaz and two others are now

charged with vandalizing and torching the muni bus. police credit the public with helping to identify and track all the suspects down. a jury in san francisco reached a verdict in a trial of a man accused of several violent attacks. 32-year-old frederick dozier is accused of sexually assaulting three women last year along 24th street, but he won't hear that verdict until tuesday after the holiday weekend. prosecutors presented both dna evidence and an alleged recorded confession during his trial. dozier was also charged with attempted murder, robbery, and kidnapping. he faces life in prison, if convicted of all counts. the department of corrections and rehabilitation plans to begin a massive review next week that could drop the arrest warrants for thousands of parole violators in the state. it comes at a time when the state is trying to ease crowding at state and county jails. the plan would involve people who are convicted of nonviolent crimes. sex offenders would be excluded from the reviews. a free seminar is scheduled

in san francisco today for people who may qualify for deferred action. that event begins at 10:00 this morning at the golden gate university school of law on mission street. back in june, president obama ordered the federal government to delay action against young adults who came to the u.s. when they were children. it's estimated that more than 200,000 have submitted applications. today's event includes legal consultations and application assistance. well, this morning, both political parties are claiming they are willing to work with the other to avert the fiscal cliff. >> on tuesday, you said loud and clear that you won't tolerate dysfunction or politicians who seek compromise as a dirty word. now, when so many of your families are still struggling. >> in this morning's weekly assess, president obama said he hopes to build consensus next week during a white house meeting with leaders of both parties. the president wants congress to extend middle class tax cuts, but says any agreement on deficit reduction must also

include tax increases for the wealthy. >> instead of raising tax rates on the american people and accepting the damage it will do to our economy, let's start to actually solve the problem. let's focus on tax reform, close the special interest loopholes and lowers tax rates. >> house speaker john boehner gave the republican address this morning, saying shoring up entitlements and reforming the tax code will lead to more jobs and a stronger economy. both sides agree another recession will hit if the nation falls over this so-called fiscal cliff, which is a combination of automatic spending cuts and tax rate increases that are scheduled to kick in at the start of next year. thousands of customers are still without power nearly two weeks after sandy hit, and now their utility might raise their rates. the ceo of con edison has said he is very sorry that some people have gone 12 days without power, but his company plans to hike utility rates for gas,

steam, and electricity anyway. many are questioning the timing of such an increase. >> it seems crazy. i know they are probably dealing with an antiquated infrastructure, but i mean, shouldn't they have thought about this maybe down the road a little bit? >> i think it's outrageous, considering what people have gone through. >> if the public service commission approves the rate hike this month, it would go into effect next october. well, the occupy movement started as a protest, but now it is being used to help those affected by sandy. volunteers with occupy sandy are sorting the donations, filling the church of st. luke and st. matthew in brooklyn. occupy wall street jump started the grassroots effort to help storm victims, mobilized through social media. >> twitter is our native language. as the tragedy was unfolding, we communicated with each other as things were going on and each person stepped up in the way they could help. >> occupy sandy is using the church as their main distribution center and phone bank.

they post the supplies they need online and send volunteers to nearby neighborhoods. any people in neighborhoods like rockaway and red oak still don't have heat or electricity and feel as though they have been abandoned amid the devastation. well, more pieces are turning up of an oracle catamaran ha crashed near the golden gate in october. remnants have been watching up on marin county beaches. some pieces are as large as 3 feet long. an $8 cleanup drives have been being held and pieces might be used to build another yacht. today, more than 30 teams will test their home made flying machines over and into mccove cove for the 10th anniversary of the red bull flugtag, starting at 1:00. contestants will launch their contraptions off a 30-foot high flight deck.

the city would get $54 million in one-time revenue and up to $19 million a year if the arena holds events more than half of the year. that arena, if given the green light, could be built on piers 30 and 32 within the next five years. well, the warriors will host the denver nuggets tonight, one day after dropping one to the lakers. the game tipped off just hours after the lakers fired their head coach mike brown. kobe bryant had 27 points to lead l.a. in their 101-77 rout. currie scored 18 for the warriors. as for the lakers coaching vacancy, the team is interested in former coach phil jackson, who retired after the 2010-2011 season. okay. today marks the regular season home finale for the stanford cardinal football team, and they host number 13 oregon state at stanford stadium. pregame ceremonies will feature a salute to veterans and current members of the military. you can see that game right here on ktvu channel 2 at noon. cal's home finale is also

today. bears host the ap's number 2 in the nation, oregon. cal is the 28-point underdog against the undefeated ducks. kickoff is at 7:30 tonight. the window for the mavericks' big wave surfing contest is now open. surfers came from around the world to the san mateo coast, holding a special prayer circle out in the water yesterday as part of the opening ceremonies. when the contest is eventually called, surfers will have 24 hours to get out to pillar point and surf those waves as possibly as big as 50 feet. >> that's the one thing that's unpredictable in oceans. we always hope and pray we get a good season. >> the contest has not been held for the past two years because the conditions just weren't right. organizers say they expect big waves to hit the shoreline by the end of the year. well, changes are coming to the happiest place on earth. why officials are cracking down on people who buy those multiday tickets and why you'll now have to carry your id around the

tents yesterday, a year after campus police broke up an encampment set up to protest tuition hikes. president obama accepted the resignation of cia director david petraeus after the retired four-star general admitted to an extra marital affair. his affair with his biographer, paula broadwell, was revealed in the course of an fbi investigation. the cold weather is suspected to have caused two water mains to burst overnight in palo alto. water flowed through the streets and seeped into at least one house. ktvu's allie rasmus is live in the neighborhood where crews are repairing the first broken line. allie? >> reporter: well, palo alto utility workers have made a lot of progress in fixing this problem. they opened up a 5-foot deep hole in the middle of the street so they could take out the broken water main, one of the two broken water mains, and here it is. they have got it removed, an 8-inch wide main. you can see this huge gaping hole in the middle. now, the supervisor here says he suspects that what caused this was some of the cold

temperatures overnight. the pipes just burst. you can see there's a crack going all the way down to the other end. now, let's show you a close-up look at this pipe when it was still in the ground and still gushing water. it started around 2:45 this morning. again, utility workers suspect that freezing temperatures may have caused this problem and there were two mains that actually broke. one on either side of newell street. now, at least one family in the neighborhood had flood damage in their home when the gushing water poured in through a side wall. they had to call in a specialist to help clean up the mess. the owners of that home are out of town on a cruise. their adult kids have no way to get in contact with them to even tell them what happened. >> once they hear about it, i think they are going to try to blame one of us! still waiting to speak with the people who are running the whole operation over here, and hopefully can find out more information than just seeing a house that has been soaked with water. >> reporter: until utility workers get both broken water

wipes completely replaced, people in this neighborhood between newell and walnut may or may not have water service. it may be intermittent while they try to get this problem resolved. back out here live, you can see they have two of the utility workers in the ground, working to replace that broken pipe we showed you with a brand-new pipe and the one they will replace it with is actually sitting off to our right. it's a plastic-looking blue pipe. that's what they will put underground. they said they no longer use cast iron pipes like the one that broke, in order to prevent this sort of thing from happening when there are cold temperatures and freezing temperatures overnitrogen. live in palo alto, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. a group of protesters planned a rally today against local police. demonstrators accuse officers of excessive force. protesters cite the issue of a high school student in may. they say an african american is killed by law enforcement in the u.s. every 36 hours.

today's event will be held at noon at oakland's frank ogawa plaza. napa valley college is airing -- officers say they fired on the man because he had a loaded gun. many of friends and family do not believe the police. the documentary made by the victim's friend will be aired next wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the mccarthy library. full sum police are trying to figure out whether a problem with an accelerator caused a teenager driver to crash into a home last night. the teen was going at least 80 miles per hour right before impact, according to neighbors. her mercedes benz traveled 15 to 20 feet into the house, damaging parts of the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. her uncle says he blames the accident on the accelerator getting stuck. the family living in that home was out to dinner at the time. a search warrant led emeryville police to a quarter million dollar marijuana stash. the department sent us this photo of boxes on boxes of

marijuana from the bust, 400 pounds of it. detectives found the drugs thursday morning while serving a search warrant. they did not find anyone there and are still searching for those responsible. the city of san francisco is preparing to help and provide and pay for sex change operations for the uninsured. the city is going to spend the next several months setting up the qualifications for eight potential patients. then it must line up providers to perform those procedures. people who live in dispran have different opinions on whether the city should pay for sexual reassignment surgery. >> this is more of a choice. i think it should be spent more on other more pressing health matters. >> it's really helped me to find a way to improve my quality of life and sometimes it's really a matter of life and death. >> the city already provides primary care, mental health services and hormone therapy for those who qualify. surgeries could be added about a year from now. if you're planning a trip to

. we're following breaking news just into our newsroom. the ap is now reporting that president obama has won the state of florida, topping mitt romney's final electoral vote to a tally, on your screen, 332 to 206. the president won by a margin of 74,000 votes in florida. well, chrysler has announced it's recalling nearly 920,000 suvs, after concerns that air bags could inflate while people

are driving. the recall affects 2002 through 2004 jeep grand cherokee and '02 and '03 liberties. investigators say last year, air bags randomly went off 215 times, causing about 80 minor injuries. chrysler plans to install an electrical filter for free to fix the problem. well, it was a new type of therapy for bay area veterans. swimming with dolphins. cheers here's. >> t pathway home for veterans organized the trip to six flags discovery kingdom yesterday. vets say being in the water with the dolphins helps them cope with the emotional stress of combat. >> this type of environment that's a positive environment, where everyone's smiling and having fun, it just helps out so much. and it fills so many holes we have in ourselves. >> pathway homes says the event is a big success and they are already talking about doing it again. there are a lot of events being held this veterans day weekend.
